We’re excited to introduce our new U12 program that has been carefully designed to replicate the representative (Rep) basketball environment, while remaining inclusive, supportive, and development‑focused.

Not selected this season doesn’t mean not ready - it means not yet. The U12 Next Development Program provides a structured development environment aligned with our representative pathway. Players continue to train in a system that reflects rep standards, focuses on skill and decision-making, and prepares them to take the next step with confidence in future seasons.

Open to all SWM Affiliate Club Members.

Players Born: 2015, 2016, 2017

This program is more than weekly training it is an incubator pathway that prepares young athletes for the next Rep season, while ensuring they already feel part of the South West Metro Pirates family.

hat Is the U12 Next Development Program?

The U12 Next Development Program mirrors the structure, standards, and expectations of our Pirates Rep program, providing players with an authentic introduction to representative basketball in a positive and age‑appropriate environment.

Your child will:

·         Train and compete under Rep-aligned structures

·         Learn Pirates playing principles and values

·         Develop confidence, skills, and basketball IQ

·         Feel connected to the Pirates now, not just in the future

Program Structure & Delivery

Phase 1: Skill Development & Grading (Weeks 1–3)

For the first three weeks, the program will focus on:

·         Fundamental skill development (footwork, ball handling, passing, shooting)

·         Decision‑making and game understanding

·         Training habits, spacing, and team concepts

·         Structured sessions similar to Rep grading and evaluation periods

This phase allows players to learn, grow, and be supported while coaches assess development needs — all in a fun, confidence‑building setting.

Phase 2: Game Play Environment (From Week 4 Onwards)

From Week 4, Sunday sessions will transition into structured games, delivered under:

·         Official basketball rules

·         Qualified referees

·         Scoring and timing systems

·         Rep‑style game flow and expectations

This provides players with real game experience in a controlled, development‑focused environment, building confidence and readiness for future Rep trials and competition.

Pirates Identity & Belonging

As part of this program:

·         Each player will be provided with a Next uniform for the season

·         Playing socks will also be provided

·         Players train and play as part of the Pirates pathway

·         The program reinforces a strong sense of belonging and pride

This is an intentional part of our philosophy — we want players to feel like Pirates now, not later.

Why This Program Matters

The U12 Next Development Program exists to:

·         Bridge the gap between domestic and Rep basketball

·         Prepare players technically, tactically, and emotionally for Rep pathways

·         Deliver high‑quality development without pressure

·         Build confident, coachable, and connected young athletes

It is a launchpad, not a shortcut focused on long‑term growth, enjoyment, and readiness.
