FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
GENERAL FAQ'S
The Junior Rep Program allows young athletes to progress beyond club basketball and represent the Pirates in higher-level competitions, namely the South Qld Junior Basketball Competition (SQJBC) and the BQ State Championships.
We select boys’ and girls’ teams in U12, U14, U16, and U18 age groups.
Yes — participating in rep can open pathways to state and national level opportunities (e.g. Queensland teams, BQ development programs, emerging squads).
• SQJBC: Regional competition across SEQ during a school term, with divisions determined via a grading tournament.
• BQ State Championships: A 4–5 day tournament following the SQJBC season, with representative teams from across Queensland.
TRIAL & SELECTION PROCESS FAQ'S
Trials for each age group are typically held 8–10 weeks before the start of their SQJBC season. Dates are announced on the club website and social media.
To trial, a player must:
• Be currently participating in our Junior Club Competition (for the current season).
• If they played rep for another association previously, have an approved BQ transfer to Pirates prior to trials.
• Be financial with SWM Basketball (i.e. all relevant fees paid).
The trial fee is $25.00. SWM Pirates (https://www.piratesbasketball.net.au/junior-rep)Prospective triallists should bring a ball and water bottle.
Yes — attendance at all trial sessions is mandatory for selection. If you cannot attend due to illness or injury, you must submit evidence (e.g. medical certificate) before trials start. No — trials are closed, and parents or spectators are not permitted to attend.
After the trial period, coaches and selectors review all participants. Players selected will be notified (via email/club communication). Those not selected are typically given feedback and encouragement to develop further and try again next season.
POST TRIAL FAQ'S
Congratulations! You’ll receive a welcome pack outlining training times, fees, uniform orders, and key dates for the season. Team managers and coaches will also be in contact shortly.
Players who weren’t selected are strongly encouraged to continue developing through our Junior Club Competitions and Skills Programs. Many players make teams in future years after gaining more experience.
Selections are made fresh each year. Coaches assess players on current performance, development, attitude, and how they fit into the overall team structure. Not being selected this season doesn’t mean you’ve gone backwards — sometimes the strength of the age group changes, new players trial, or team needs are different. We encourage all players to use the feedback provided during the trials, continue developing through club and development programs, and trial again next season.
Team placement can change from year to year. Coaches may see different team balance needs, the depth of talent in your age group may shift, or other players may have developed quickly. Being placed in a different team is still recognition of your ability to play Rep basketball and an opportunity to keep improving.
Yes — going up an age group can have a big impact on selection outcomes. Players are competing against older and often more experienced athletes, which can influence whether they are placed in a higher or lower team compared to the previous season. Coaches will always look at the best fit for both the player and the team.
Uniform ordering details will be sent out with your selection confirmation. Fittings will be scheduled early so uniforms arrive before the start of competition.
Rep teams usually train twice a week at Hibiscus Stadium or affiliated venues. Training times are allocated based on coach and court availability.
No. Rep basketball is a performance-based program. Coaches aim to develop all players, but playing time may vary depending on game situations, effort, and team needs.
Players are expected to prioritise their Rep commitments. If unavoidable conflicts arise, communicate early with your coach and team manager.
