Newlee Appointed NBL1 Women's Head Coach 2024

The South West Metro Pirates are excited to welcome Jon Newlee as our NBL1 Women’s Head Coach for the 2024 season. With an illustrious career and a proven track record of success, Coach Newlee brings a wealth of knowledge, dedication, and expertise to our program.

Jon has just finished his 15th year as Women’s Head Coach of NCAA Div1 University of Idaho. His list of accomplishments during his career are a testament to his ability as a coach.

Over 370 wins as Head Coach

Four NCAA Conference tournament titles

Two Big Sky Conference regular season titles and one Western Athletic Conference regular season title

Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year two times

Pirates CEO, Chris Angus was animated when speaking about the appointment and what he expects Coach Newlee to bring to our Association. “Jon is someone that will bring high levels of experience and knowledge to our program. He is down to earth and relatable and just wants to make those around him better. I am excited to be able to bring someone of Jon’s experience and character to the Pirates and have him part of our Pirate family moving forward”.

Coach Newlee also shared his enthusiasm on his appointment and decision to join the Pirates. “I want to thank Chris, Steve, Keith and the board for putting their faith in me and giving me this tremendous opportunity to be the new head coach of the Pirates. Through the hiring process I could see that we shared the same vision of a family first culture and that it ran throughout the entire organization. It definitely feels like a perfect fit for our family. I am excited and fired up to get started and officially join The Ship!”

Coach Newlee is already getting to work putting the 2024 roster together looking to build off our top 4 finish from 2023. Our NBL1 Women’s program is in excellent hands. Welcome to The Ship Jon!
