Pirates mixed news, but Kick forward in 2017

June 2, 2017

It’s been a hectic week for the WCMG Pirates QBL Men’s program with club stalwart and Adelaide 36er Brendan Teys undergoing knee surgery at short notice. Trying everything in his power to avoid going under the knife Teys fought to return to full health, however surgery became the best option to rectify the knee issue after a visit to the surgeon this week. Teys will be out for the remainder of the 2017 QBL season but should make a full recovery and be in great shape for his 2017/18 NBL campaign. On behalf of the Pirates family we wish Brendan a speedy and full recovery.

Injuries to other key players such as Jarred Bairstow and Tyrell Harrison have left the team a little undermanned however in a case of right place, right time the WCMG Pirates have signed one of the most, high profiled players in Australian Basketball History with Brisbane Bullets forward Daniel Kickert joining the club. “Kicks” as he is affectionately known was the first player in NBL history to join the exclusive 50-40-90 club after an amazing shooting display in the 2016/17 NBL season. After graduating from St Mary’s College in California, Kicks commenced what has been one of the most successful careers in Europe for an Australian player. The sharp shooter has played all over Europe with stints in Poland, Ukraine and more recently in Spain. He returned to Australia for the 2014/15 NBL season with Melbourne United before moving to Brisbane to join the Bullets family in their return season last year.

Highly skilled, competitive and the ultimate professional Kicks will look to help the Pirates drive forward with their season and will form one of the most dynamic front courts with 2016 QBL Most Valuable Player Tanner McGrew.

“It’s a great opportunity for me to help the Pirates out while they have a few guys on the sidelines. I know some of the guys (who have been around the Bullets) and there is a real strong chemistry within the club. The results will come with time if the group continues to work hard. It’s great to get to play some games during the NBL off season to ensure I stay sharp and game fit. I’m looking forward to getting started with the guys”.
